Arena Consultancy & Stage-by-Stage Support
Not every client needs a full arena build — sometimes you just need expert support at a key stage.
Our arena consultancy service provides on-site guidance for any phase of construction, including:
• Arena & drainage layout planning
• Stage installation checks
• Membrane and surface preparation
Whether you’re managing your own self-build or working with local contractors, AG Rural Solutions ensures your horse arena construction meets professional standards for performance, safety, and longevity.

Arena Build Process — Step by Step
Our six-stage horse arena build process delivers long-term performance and professional finish quality — from groundworks to fencing.
1️⃣ Site Preparation & Excavation
Laser-levelled falls are established to ensure proper drainage across the arena. Ground levels are checked and adjusted using modern grade lasers to create a stable, even foundation.
2️⃣ Drainage Installation
Perforated pipes are installed at the correct spacing, surrounded by clean drainage stone to promote free-flowing water movement and long-term surface integrity.
3️⃣ Sub-Base Layer
A 20–40 mm clean granite or carboniferous limestone is laid and compacted in layers. This forms a strong, free-draining foundation that resists movement and waterlogging.
4️⃣ Membrane Placement
Two layers of non-woven geotextile membrane (minimum thickness of 200 gsm arena dependant) are installed — the first separates the natural ground from the base stone, and the second separates the compacted stone from the sand surface — ensuring effective drainage, structural stability, and long-term contamination control.
5️⃣ Surface Installation
High-grade silica sand is laid and laser-levelled to achieve an even riding surface. Optional fibre, or Flexiride additives can be incorporated to suit specific disciplines and performance needs.
6️⃣ Finishing & Fencing
Every arena is completed with a 3-rail post-and-rail perimeter and a 12 ft access gate as standard — combining durability, safety, and professional presentation.
⚠️ Arena Quotes — What to Watch For
Before choosing an arena contractor, compare the materials and methods behind each quote — not just the price. Lower costs often mean weaker drainage, poor stone choice, or shortcuts that reduce arena lifespan.
Building an arena is a major investment — but not all quotes (or estimates) tell the same story. Some contractors undercut costs by skipping key materials or stages that directly affect performance and lifespan.
Before you sign off on any work, make sure you understand both the pricing and the process.
💰 Estimate vs Quote
An estimate is a rough guide based on early discussions or site visits — useful to gauge a project’s scale and budget.
A quote, however, is a fixed price agreement provided before work begins, outlining all materials, labour, and terms.
👉 Always ask for a formal written quote with a breakdown of inclusions — it protects you from “extras” later and ensures everyone is clear on scope.
1️⃣ Sub-Base Materials
Make sure the quote specifies clean, angular 20–40 mm granite or carboniferous limestone, not “40-to-dust” or mixed rubble. Fine material blocks drainage and causes the surface to shift or flood.
2️⃣ Membrane Layers
There should be two layers of 200 gsm non-woven geotextile:
- One between the soil and base stone
- One between the stone and sand
These layers prevent contamination, improve drainage, and keep the arena structure stable long-term.
3️⃣ Drainage Layout
Ask for details on pipe diameter, spacing, and falls. Proper systems are laser-checked, gravel-backfilled, and include accessible outlets for easy maintenance.
4️⃣ Levelling & Compaction
Each stage — subgrade, sub-base, and surface — should be laser-graded and compacted using a roller.
Miss a stage, and the arena will move or puddle over time.
5️⃣ Surface Materials
Quotes should state exact surface type and depth (e.g. silica sand, fibre, or Flexiride) — along with how it’s mixed and installed for consistency.
6️⃣ Fencing, Gates & Finishing
Although fencing beyond the retaining boards isn’t always necessary, a quality build is completed with 3-rail post-and-rail fencing and a 12 ft gate as standard. The site should be left clean, neatly trimmed, and ready to ride — not requiring any further work.
7️⃣ Warranty & Terms
Check for a written guarantee.
AG Rural Solutions provides a 5-year workmanship warranty (T&Cs apply) — proof that every build is designed to last.
